In 2017, DG ECHO gave EUR 3 million to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support its Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF). When a National Red Cross or Red Crescent Society needs immediate financial support to respond to a disaster, it can request funds from the DREF.
From February 2017 to March 2018, this DG ECHO support was used for 28 DREF operations which assisted more than 1 800 000 beneficiaries. The support contributes to saving lives, preventing and alleviating human suffering, and safeguarding the integrity and dignity of people affected by natural disasters and man-made crises.
